Platform Economy UK is a new trade body for Platform Economy startups.
Platform Economy companies include sharing and gig economy platforms and marketplaces. They sit at the intersection of tech innovation and traditional marketplaces, and are revolutionising how goods and services are exchanged - including how people travel, buy groceries, and dress their children.
These platform economy companies have had a huge impact on daily life, but they have lacked a unified voice in politics. Without this voice, Platform Economy startups suffer from outdated, irrelevant, and counterproductive legislation and regulation.
This is why Platform Economy UK exists.
Platform Economy UK has three key aims:
-
Policy Work
Now more than ever, the Platform Economy needs a voice fighting for it in policy. We will be fighting for policy that allows startups to grow and works for everyone involved in the Platform Economy.
We will be working on key issues to startups including Artificial Intelligence, taxation, trust and safety, access to funding, and employment.
-
Bringing the Sector Together
We want to bring together companies from across the sector to build a network that provides support, business opportunities and best practice.
As well as opportunities to network and learn from experienced industry players, we want to engage with other trade bodies globally to understand best practice and learnings.
-
The Good Platform Programme
We are planning to introduce a “Good Platform Programme” - a system similar to B Corp Certification - for Platform Economy startups.
The criteria, set in collaboration with firms in the sector and tailored to different models within it, will allow members to publicly establish high standards within their own organisations.
